Raleigh, N.C.– June 25, 2018 – Holly Springs Surgery Center (HSSC), a freestanding surgery center located in Holly Springs, N.C., completed its first total outpatient knee replacement surgery case in June, 2018. Dr. William Andersen of Cary Orthopaedics completed the surgery as part of the Same Day Joint Program.
HSSC’s Director of Nursing, Elizabeth Stocum, RN, CNOR, worked in conjunction with Dr. Andersen and Cary Orthopaedics to develop clinical protocols specifically designed to support same day outpatient total joint replacement surgery for qualified patients. Advancements in pre and post-operative care, anesthesia protocols, and pain management techniques allow HSSC to safely perform these surgeries in the convenient, comfortable, and lower cost environment of the surgery center.
“I was grateful to be a catalyst in implementing the program,” said Director of Nursing Elizabeth Stocum. “We refined the protocol and follow-up to provide our first, same day total joint replacement. I’m incredibly proud of all of my HSSC colleagues.”
“I have complete confidence in the staff and administration of Holly Springs Surgery Center and had no qualms about starting outpatient knee replacements at the Center” explained Dr. Andersen. “The staff preparation was exemplary, and the cases went extremely smoothly both for me and for the patients. The Center did a great job educating and engaging the patients in the process preoperatively, which is what makes outpatient joint replacement feasible.”
By offering same day total joint replacement, HSSC and its surgeon partners maximize the value they bring to Holly Springs and the greater Raleigh community.
Outpatient total joints represent a growing trend in the industry. There was a 47 percent increase in elective outpatient hip and knee replacement procedures nationally between 2012 and 2015. Additionally, it is estimated that the volumes of knee and hip replacement procedures will increase 457 percent and 633 percent, respectively, over the next decade.
Physician-owned and operated, Holly Springs Surgery Center is an innovative joint venture with WakeMed Health, Novant Health, Compass Surgical Partners and a group of local surgeons. These vital partnerships allow HSSC to offer high-quality, specialized and complex care. The center is staffed with experienced medical professionals, committed to ensuring that patients have the best possible outpatient surgical experience.
